Senators continue debating today on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 (S. 2611). A strong effort is being made by both parties to pass a reform bill this week before the Senate breaks for a Memorial Day recess. On May 19, 2006, in one of the day?s tenser moments, the Senate beat back an attempt to strike provisions of the bill that provide a path to citizenship for guest workers. Senators also restored language allowing workers to self-petition for permanent residence.
